France boss Didier Deschamps was left baffled with Adrien Rabiot’s decision to rule himself out of World Cup duty this summer.
Rabiot was so upset to have not made the Les Bleus’ 23-man squad for the finals in Russia he sensationally withdrew himself from the standby list to voice his outrage.
And Deschamps said the PSG defender has made a “huge mistake” and will regret his actions in the future.
Deschamps said in a press conference: “I was obviously surprised. I can understand his immense disappointment but I’m convinced he made a huge mistake.
“Hopefully it will help him grow up and think. When you play at the highest level, you can let your emotions take over. I’m surprised because he is a young player with only a few caps.”
Rabiot has won four Ligue 1 titles during his time in the French capital but the 23-year-old has only won six caps for his country during three years in the national team set-up.
He made 43 appearances for PSG this season, forging a strong partnership with Italy international Marco Verratti.
But Rabiot was snubbed in favour of Sevilla ace Steven N’zonzi, with Bayern Munich’s Corentin Tolisso also joining Juventus’ Blaise Matuidi, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.
