Where does LAFC's chase for history sit after 30 games?

The chase for history remains in reach for LAFC, despite suffering their first home loss of 2019 against Minnesota United FC on Sept. 1 and following that up with a pair of road draws.

Through 30 league games this season, the second-year club have built a 19W-4L-7D record, powered by their nearly-undefeated run at their Banc of California Stadium home and a stylish, attack-minded philosophy that’s stacking up goals by the truckload.

They’re right in the conversation to re-write the record books come Decision Day presented by AT&T. Carlos Vela is well on pace to break the single-season scoring record, but where does LAFC stack up with clubs that hold various team records at this point in their respective seasons?

LAFC are on pace to one-up Atlanta United’s point total through a club’s first two seasons of MLS action. The Five Stripes, last year’s MLS Cup champions, reached 124, while LAFC have just three less through 64 games. Even earning just draws in their final four matches would get them over that line.

Last season’s New York Red Bulls set a league record for most points in a campaign with 71, and they got off to a strong start despite lasting to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions League.

LAFC didn’t deal with that competition this season, and are outpacing RBNY by three points at the 30-match mark.

Same concept as points: The Red Bulls were still able to enjoy a fast start despite focusing on CCL as well. But LAFC stay just ahead of the pace set by 2018 RBNY.

In pursuit of one of the league’s loftiest records, LAFC are still behind the 1998 LA Galaxy in goals scored. The Galaxy scored 85 goals over just 32 matches (!) that season, a mark that hasn’t come close to being broken, but LAFC are now in second place with 77, surpassing 2017 Toronto FC and 1998 D.C. United, who both had 74.

With the benefit of two extra games than the 1998 Galaxy had, can LAFC get over 85?

LAFC are well ahead of the pace of the prolific 1998 Galaxy in goal difference, even though they’re slightly off their high-water mark of +46.
