Great Britain and Ireland suffered a thrashing in the amateur Walker Cup, with the United States posting a 19-7 victory.
With the match tied at 2-2 heading into Saturday at Los Angeles Country Club, the US team won eight out of 12 clashes, allowing them to clinch victory early on Sunday.
Stewart Hagestad, a member at the club, clinched the final point to cement the commanding victory.
“To have the final point to clinch the Walker Cup, on my home course, in front of all my friends and family, is pretty special,” Hagestad said. “I think I’m going to have to take some time and sleep on this and let it marinate.”
Welshman David Boote was the only British player to win a point on Sunday, with GB&I losing the trophy they clinched in 2015 at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
The last time GB&I won in the US was in 2001, with the Walker Cup hosts winning 11 of the past 13 events.
