Top 10 On-Court Moments of 2017: Vintage Venus Williams

With the destination of the Davis Cup determined, the professional tennis season has come to a close. Thus, we begin our look back at 2017, a memorable year on and off the court. Our Top 10 On-Court Moments, and our Top 10 Off-Court Moments, will remind you of everything that transpired.

Venus Williams might not have won a title this season, but she had something no other top player did—consistency in the big events. Williams reached the final of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and WTA Finals, the semifinals at Flushing Meadows, and the fourth round of the French Open.

At eight events, more than half her total, she fell to the eventual champion. While there were plenty of distractions off the court—most recently, her sister Serena’s wedding and a $400,000 burglary of her Florida home—she didn’t allow it to affect her performances.

That’s good by most standards. At 37, and playing with Sjogren’s syndrome, it’s remarkable. The season had few campaigns as compelling.
