MADRID, Spain – Milwaukee Bucks center Pau Gasol will miss the FIBA World Cup in China after undergoing an operation on his foot last week, Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said Tuesday, May 14.
“His loss is a big blow because he’s a player with a lot of history and in terms of leadership a whole lot more,” Scariolo told the AS sports newspaper.
Gasol, who won NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2008 and 2009, underwent successful surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot last Thursday.
The Bucks played the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference finals, but the six-time NBA All-Star will miss out not only the remainder of the playoffs but also the World Cup that will be start August 31 as he recovers.
