Report: Argentina's Independiente quietly working to acquire Ignacio Piatti

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

For years it’s generally been expected that at some point Ignacio Piatti will call time on his MLS adventure and return home to Argentina to rejoin San Lorenzo, the club he led to a Copa Libertadores title in 2014 and whose fans continue to revere him. Piatti himself has publicly suggested that the current season might well be his last with the Montreal Impact, citing his desire to be closer to family, including his aging father.

But according to a new Marca report, Nacho’s homecoming could well unfold with a different club entirely.

Independiente manager Sebastian Beccacece is quietly working to lure Piatti south to join his side, the outlet claims, and is undeterred by the player’s recent injury troubles. Piatti, 34, is currently dealing with a knee issue that has limited him to five league appearances in 2019. It seems the playmaker would have to accept a reduced salary in order to make the move happen, however.

One of the top attackers in modern MLS history, Piatti played for Independiente a decade ago before his move to Italian side Lecce. A Designated Player, his current contract runs through this season, though the Impact hold an option year for 2020.
