Pep Guardiola is the subject of a scathing attack made by Bayern Munich and Germany doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in his new autobiography.
German paper BILD have been published extracts from Muller-Wohlfahrt’s book, which discuss the time Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, was head coach of Bayern.
The relationship between the pair grew increasingly fractious following Guardiola’s appointment in 2013, leading Muller-Wohlfahrt to resign in April 2015, towards the end of Pep’s second season in charge.
Guardiola blamed many of Bayern’s injuries during that time period on Muller-Wohlfahrt’s treatment methods, which include homeopathy, while one incident saw Guardiola caught on camera sarcastically clapping Muller-Wohlfahrt after an injury was suffered by Mehdi Benatia in the middle of a game.
But now Muller-Wohlfahrt has claimed the injuries were not his fault, but Guardiola’s.
“Guardiola didn’t have any trust in me and my team,” the German doctor wrote. “On the one hand, he showed no interest in medical questions, and on the other hand, he demanded miracles from us.
“On just the third time we met, Guardiola came up to me and started ranting in an accusatory and aggressive tone. He said: ‘What is going on here? I thought I was coming to one of the best medical departments in the world and we have two long-term injuries!’
“At the time, Guardiola was portrayed in the media as an innovative, even revolutionary coach. But at Bayern he really turned back the clock.
“In his first season, we had many more muscular injuries than before. He thought he knew better on everything. He would do a five-minute warm-up, and think it was fine. It was never going to go well.”
Muller-Wohlfahrt ended his attack with the most scathing remark of all: he suggested Guardiola has ‘weak self-confidence’ and ‘lives in constant fear of losing power or authority’.
He continued: “I think Guardiola is someone with weak self-confidence, who will do anything to disguise that from people. That’s why he seems to live in constant fear, not so much of defeat, but of losing power or authority.”
