Welcome back, BWP.

After starting the season with a seven-game goalless skid, New York Red Bulls’ striker Bradley Wright-Phillips has launched himself up the MLS Golden Boot table over the past couple of weeks. He’s scored five goals in his last two matches – including a hat trick on Saturday – to move into a tie for second-place on the MLS goal chart.

Things didn’t go quite as well for everyone in the top-five, with Sebastian Giovinco suffering an injury in the same game against the Red Bulls and David Villa – who claimed sole possession of first after several weeks tied atop the Golden Boot standings – seeing one costly slip ruin NYCFC’s Sunday and his chance for another goal.

Cyle Larin and Chris Wondolowski are both within a few goals of the top, but they’ll have to wait until after the Copa America Centenario break to be featured in this space.

New York City FC – Forward

Oh, what could’ve been. Four minutes after he gave NYCFC a 2-0 lead, Villa had a chance to seal a much-needed home win with a 70th-minute penalty kick. Then, the slip. Orlando took full advantage, scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to ruin NYCFC’s afternoon. David Villa highlights

Toronto FC – Forward

Rough week for Giovinco. First, the Euro snub, then an injury in TFC’s 3-0 loss at the Red Bulls. The only saving grace? The Italian’s knock doesn’t appear to be serious.  Sebastian Giovinco highlights

New York Red Bulls – Forward

The 2014 Golden Boot winner is flying high, and now he’s made this list for the first time this season. The only bummer for BWP and the red-hot Red Bulls? They don’t have any matches to keep the momentum rolling during the Copa break.  . Bradley Wright-Phillips highlights

In the case of a tie, the Golden Boot winner will be decided by the player with the most assists; if still tied, the winner will be the player with fewer minutes played.
