On top of all the MLS, Leagues Cup and Open Cup action this summer, some MLS sides have added to their schedule friendlies with some of Europe’s best.
Monday marks the Colorado Rapids’ friendly with Arsenal, one of five friendlies on the immediate horizon.
Colorado Rapids vs. Arsenal FC | July 15
After their thrilling 2-2 draw against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, the Rapids return home to face Premier League giants Arsenal. Both clubs are owned by Stan Kroenke.
It’ll be Arsenal’s first friendly ahead of the 2019-20 season. The club are in the United States for preseason and have brought a 29-man squad, including Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Real Valladolid | July 16
The Quakes, amid a fantastic run of form under new head coach Matias Almeyda, will pause from competitive matches for a friendly against Real Valladolid, a La Liga club owned by Brazilian legend Ronaldo.
San Jose played a friendly earlier this season, giving chances to non-regular starters, which saw 15-year-old Homegrown Cade Cowell find the back of the net.
Minnesota United vs. Aston Villa | July 17
On a seven-game winning streak across all competitions, Minnesota are one of the hottest teams in MLS. They’ll take a break from MLS and Open Cup play for a friendly against Aston Villa, one of the teams Loons head coach Adrian Heath briefly played for in his career.
The match will be Aston Villa’s first since winning promotion to the Premier League. Young star Jack Grealish is with the squad, as is new signing Wesley, a Brazilian striker. Former Chelsea legend John Terry is an assistant coach for the club, too.
Seattle Sounders vs. Borussia Dortmund | July 17
Between home matches against Atlanta United and the Portland Timbers, the Sounders welcome German giants Borussia Dortmund to CenturyLink Field for a friendly on Wednesday.
Dortmund, who finished runners-up in the Bundesliga last year, announced their traveling squad, which includes Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze, Jadon Sancho and other global stars.
FC Dallas vs. Sevilla FC | July 17
Dallas will welcome La Liga side Sevilla to Frisco on Wednesday, the first of the Spanish club’s preseason preparations.
Sevilla, who have busy this summer with nine new signings, finished sixth last year. Fans will hope to get a first look at their new stars against Dallas, including Lucas Ocampos, Luuk de Jong and others.
D.C. United vs. Marseille | July 23
After a four-team Ligue 1 preseason tournament wraps up at Audi Field, D.C. United will host Marseille for a friendly on July 23.
Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, boasting the likes of Mario Balotelli, Dimitri Payet and others.
