“Go out with a bang, not a whimper like this. Go out with courage, not with an approach bordering on cowardice.”
These are the words of Henry Winter, writing in The Times, following Manchester United’s 2-1 Champions League exit at the hands of Sevilla.
United appeared to be scared to attack the visitors’ goal, with Romelu Lukaku scoring the hosts’ only goal of the game – United had just three shots on target – and were well short of Sevilla in terms of attempts over two legs in the last 16.
Even Tottenham, the other English side knocked out of the Champions League, managed more shots than United and they faced Juventus’ defensive wall which consisted of Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli.
Total shots (over two legs)
Man United: 23
Shots on target (over two legs)
Man United: four
OPINION: It’s the beginning of the end for Jose Mourinho at Man United
United’s defeat to Sevilla was the end of Mourinho’s career as an elite manager
