Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted he fears Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial could leave the club because they aren’t receiving enough love and support from Jose Mourinho.
It’s been a tumultuous season for the Red Devils and their manager.
Despite finishing second in the Premier League – “Performance-wise it wasn’t great,” says Scholes – there has been a constant tension in the dugout, with Mourinho digging out his players for their below-par performances.
The boss was particularly scathing towards his team after last month’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton.
“It was not good enough,” he said. “The players who replaced others did not perform at a good level and, when individuals do that, it is difficult for the team to play well.”
Those comments were in direct reference to 20-year-old Rashford and 22-year-old Martial, with Mouriunho suggesting justification for their bit-part roles this season.
Asked about the manager’s attitude towards some of his young players this season, Scholes told talkSPORT: “It’s a little bit worrying, especially the comment after the Brighton game.
“These young players need an arm around them these days, they need a bit of love at times and they aren’t really getting that. Would they improve if they get that? I hope that they would.”
And the former midfielder, who won 11 Premier League titles in 20 seasons with Man United, fears Mourinho’s attitude could come back to bite the club if their young stars leave.
Speaking about Rashford and Martial, Scholes added: “I know they’re good players, they’re really talented players.
“Those two especially, I just don’t want them to be players who leave and turn out to be sensational, because you can easily see that happening.”
