Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel insists it is “not certain” that Liverpool target Leon Goretzka will leave the club in January.
The 22-year-old has been widely tipped for a big-money switch when the transfer window re-opens and Liverpool are firm favourites to land the midfielder.
However, they face stiff competition from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the race for his signature.
And now a possible move to Anfield has been thrown into further doubt after Heidel revealed that Goretzka is not certain to leave Schalke in January.
The Bundesliga giants still remain hopeful that the Germany international will pen a new contract at the Veltins Arena.
“I have faith in Leon and his advisers. We remain in the race,” Heidel told Kicker.
Despite Heidel’s latest revelations, Jurgen Klopp is likely to push forward with a January swoop for the highly-rated midfielder, with a battle for his signature likely to ensue.
