The Republic of Ireland’s wait to qualify for a World Cup will have to keep for another four years at the least.
The Boys in Green arrived into the second-leg of their play-off against Denmark as favourites to progress after securing a goalless draw in Copenhagen.
But despite taking an early lead through Shane Duffy, Martin O’Neill’s men succumbed to a 5-1 aggregate defeat at the Aviva Stadium.
Ireland’s failure to see off Denmark means they have failed to qualify for the last four World Cups, with their last appearance coming at the 2002 finals.
Russia will undoubtedly be a duller place without the Irish support and they shared their disappointment at missing out on a trip to Eastern Europe.
