West Ham and Everton both confirmed they would be on the lookout for new managers this summer, with David Moyes and Sam Allardyce dismissed from their respective jobs on Wednesday

Moyes was out of contract with the Hammers and they decided against extending his deal, despite the Scot successfully guiding them to Premier League survival, while Allardyce was sacked with one year left on his existing contract with the Goodison Park club.

Moyes’ West Ham beat Allardyce’s Everton 3-1 in the pair’s final games in charge of their respective clubs

Though the former England boss helped the Toffees to an eighth place finish since taking charge on Merseyside in November 2017, he has been consistently criticised by the club’s support for the archaic football his team have played.

Paulo Fonseca, the Shakhtar Donetsk coach, was said to be a target of both clubs but it appears he prefers to stay in the Ukraine, while Marco Silva, formerly of Watford, and ex-Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini have also been linked with the vacant positions.

But Harry Redknapp, the former West Ham boss, is amazed both jobs are even available. Speaking to talkSPORT, the 72-year-old, expressed his surprise at the dismissals of Moyes and Allardyce – though he sensed not all was well at Goodison Park.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Redknapp said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“I sensed it with Sam that the fans for whatever reason weren’t happy with the way they were playing and the football they thought they should be seeing.

“And you had that feeling that with Sam it was not going to last.

Everton’s supporters never got behind the appointment of Allardyce as manager

“But with David Moyes – he’s gone in and I don’t see any reason why they haven’t kept him. He’s done a good job, got a good backroom staff – Stuart Pearce and Billy McKinlay looked like they worked well together.

“So it didn’t make any sense to me.

“I think they’ve left themselves in difficult situations – both clubs.”

Rafa Benitez, the Newcastle manager, has also been linked with both jobs having successfully guided the Magpies to top flight safety with relative ease.

Asked if Benitez would be a good appointment for West Ham, Redknapp continued: “Yeah, if they can get him. He knows what he’s about, Rafa.

“But will he leave Newcastle? Will Newcastle give him the money to give it a go?

Benitez has been linked with both Everton and West Ham having successfully kept Newcastle in the Premier League this season

“He did a miracle this year keeping Newcastle up; they came up with a Championship squad, but he got on with it and kept them up in the end which was a great achievement.

“He’d be a great signing for West Ham.

“He’d also be a great signing for Everton.

“But if they don’t get Rafa where are they going to go? Pellegrini? Okay he won the title at Manchester City but it’s not always impossible to win the title at City with those players he had playing for him.”
