Heat's Hassan Whiteside injures right knee in Game 3, will have MRI Sunday

The Heat might be in trouble. Miami center Hassan Whiteside suffered a right knee injury in the first half of Game 3 vs. the Toronto Raptors and did not return for the rest of the game.

There appeared to be no contact on the knee, which is never good for short-term recovery. Without Whiteside, the Heat become a smaller unit and lose both their best shot blocker and finisher in the pick and roll. Much of what the Heat have done to reconfigure their team has been around Whiteside’s growth the past three months.

If the injury is serious, it endangers a big-money deal that Whiteside was set to pursue in free agency this summer with Whiteside currently making less than $1 million per year. Coach Erik Spoelstra called the injury a “twisted” right knee and said that Whiteside would have an MRI on Sunday.

There’s always hope, but this injury does not sound good.

Following the game, Whiteside talked to reports and said he was going to pray on the injury and hope the MRI comes back with good news. From the Miami Herald:

Asked if he believes it could be a long-term injury, Whiteside said: “I don’t know. We’ll know more when I get the MRI. … I’m going to just pray on it.”

“I was just going for the rebound, and I felt someone fall on my knee,” Whiteside said. “I think Kyle Lowry dove or fell into my knee and pushed it in. I didn’t see the play, but that’s what happened.”

Jonas Valanciunas has been a better player in the playoffs and in this series, but Whiteside is actually more valuable to the Heat. With no Chris Bosh and no Whiteside, that’s two key weapons out for Miami on both ends of the floor and that could be enough to end its hopes of challenging Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals.
