Amid interest from Toronto FC, Belgian leaders KRC Genk have released a statement regarding star midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo.
Genk claims they reached an agreement with the player that he would stay at the club for the remainder of their season. They expect Pozuelo to honor that agreement, despite his management pushing for a move away immediately.
MLSsoccer.com’s Sam Stejskal reported Friday that Toronto were pursuing Pozuelo for a transfer fee in the region of $10 million and hoped to get the deal done quickly so the Spaniard could join TFC ahead of their Concacaf Champions League match on Feb. 19.
Genk currently sit atop the Belgian first division, 11 points ahead of second-place Club Brugge. Pozuelo is one of the club’s vital players, with has six goals and 13 assists in 30 Belgian Jupiler League and UEFA Europa League matches this season.
