WATCH—Jon Wertheim reacts to Davis Cup changes:
Garbine Muguruza is pain-free but lacking matches going into the US Open.
The two-time Grand Slam champion from Spain fell in the first round of Cincinnati, having withdrawn from San Jose and Montreal with an arm injury.
“I’m happy that I didn’t feel pain. Obviously, I didn’t have a lot of practices to recover, so I had to manage a little bit. I’m happy that I didn’t feel pain. I competed. Didn’t go my way. I’m going to take that positive and keep training for the US Open,” she said.
Muguruza was the defending champion at Cincinnati, and the No. 9’s ranking will fall a few more spots next week.
It is her fifth opening-round defeat of the season, but she says her two Grand Slam victories allow her to go into events knowing she doesn’t have to be “100 percent ready…[in order] to win it.”
Muguruza is also considering whether to take a wild card into New Haven.
