Former Arsenal captain Frank McLintock has hit out at Arsene Wenger and the club’s transfer policy over the last few years.
Wenger’s managerial future at the north London club has been called into question once again after the 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich and he has confirmed that he will manage next season – either at Arsenal or another club.
However, McLintock told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that the calibre of players the club have signed are a large part of why they are where they are.
“When I look back over the last year or two some of the buys recently, when you think of Chambers, Gabriel, Mustafi and Xhaka, compared to the buys he [Wenger] made when he first took over a great side from George Graham, with Vieira, Henry, Petit, Overmars and Pires, there is no comparison,” said the Scot.
“Those players that I have just mentioned are decent players but the players that we’re talking about many years ago were world class.
“I think the buying policy of Arsenal as well as other things has gone by the river really.
“I thought for a while that [the lack of money] was why Wenger wasn’t doing as well as he should do.
“But when you look at the money in the last year alone, that he has spent, he’s well up there with all the other teams as well.
“I think he’s much more capable than what he’s dishing out just now.”
