Federer starts bid for seventh ATP Finals title with win over Sock

It appears that Roger Federer intends to finish off his comeback year on a high note. He defeated Jack Sock in the opening match of the ATP World Tour Finals with relative ease, 6-4, 7-6 (4), in an hour and thirty minutes.

The 36-year-old didn’t give the American a single break point opportunity, and is now on his road to a seventh ATP Tour Final title. Federer is also the oldest player to qualify for the season-ending tournament—just another feat to be added to his collection of achievements.

Nerves were holding Sock back, who won his first ATP Masters title in Paris to sneak into the year-end championships for the first time. He calmed down in the middle of the second set, coming close to a break point, but there was never a moment when the world No. 9 seemed to be in control.

Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev are also in the Boris Becker Group with Sock and Federer.
