Danny Murphy has slammed Christian Benteke as ‘selfish’ and says he should be dropped for Crystal Palace’s next game.
Benteke fluffed a stoppage-time penalty that cost the Eagles two priceless points against Bournemouth on Saturday after taking the ball off designated spot-kick taker Luka Milivojevic.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson hit out at the striker after the match for defying team orders and claimed the miss could prove disastrous as the club battles to stay in the Premier League.
And Murphy, the former Liverpool and England star, says Hodgson was right to be raging.
Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, he said: “It was self-indulgent and selfish.
“He has cost them and if they go down because of two [dropped] points, it is on him.
“I wouldn’t play him next game because of it. I would put him on the bench.”
Asked what the Palace players’ reaction would have been at the end of the game, Murphy said: “If they have got anything about them, they would muller him.
“Roy, for all his articulate words and his calmness, he can lose it. Trust me, he will have mullered him.”
