Brooks Koepka captured his maiden major championship at the US Open after recording a joint tournament low score of 16-under par at Erin Hills.

Koepka, 27, carded an exceptional final-round 67 to finish four strokes clear of 54-hole leader Brian Harman (72) and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (66).

“The way I played this week was just unbelievable,” said Koepka, who ranked tied fourth in fairways hit (88%) and first in greens in regulation (86%).

“To be in the same category as some of the names on this trophy, this is just truly special.

The victory marks Koepka’s third win on the PGA and European Tour following wins at the 2014 Turkish Airlines Open and 2015 Phoenix Open.

Koepka’s 17-under par total matches Rory McIlroy’s at Congressional in 2011, and his triumph means the last seven majors have been won by first-time winners.

Koepka raced out the blocks with birdies at the first and second to hit the front on his own and never looked back.

He added a third birdie of the day at the par-4 eighth, before handing it back at the 10th, but then took full control of the tournament with three consecutive birdies from the 13th.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood finished on his own in fourth on 11-under to record his best finish in just his seventh major championship.

Rickie Fowler was a further shot behind on 10-under alongside Xander Schauffele and Bill Haas.

Despite his fireworks on Saturday when posting the lowest score in relation to par at the US Open with a 9-under 63, Justin Thomas slumped back into the pack on 8 under.
