Arsenal are expected to name Unai Emery their new manager this week with reports on Monday claiming they want the former Paris Saint-Germain boss ahead of Mikel Arteta.

Arteta appeared to be the favourite to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates, but issues over the north London club’s finances caused the former Gunners midfielder to reject the chance to be named a manager for the first time.

Emery quickly shot to the top of Arsenal shortlist, and reports on Monday claimed a deal is all but agreed for the 46-year-old Spaniard, who worked at Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Valencia prior to his appointment in Paris in 2016.

French journalist Erik Bielderman, who works for L’Equipe, joined talkSPORT to offer his view on Emery – confirming he will not be Arsene Wenger Mark II.

“He will be nice to watch, but it won’t be like Arsene Wenger,” Bielderman told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“He came to Paris with a very offensive vision, but after six months he went back to the Laurent Blanc style of play with a consistent 4-3-3- system with one forward – [Edinson] Cavani – and two wingers – [Kylian] Mbappe and [Angel] Di Maria.

“This was the style suited to PSG before he came, and he never succeeded in changing the style with the type of players he had.

“The real point with Emery is not the style of play; he is a pragmatic, offensive type of manager.

“He is not a philosophical manager like Wenger, because Wenger, whatever the situation, was never going to change his philosophy; he preferred to lose with his philosophy than win with the philosophy of someone else.

“The question is: for the very first time he will be the boss. At PSG the main key of his failure was not about tactics, his game style or his human managing, it was because he was not the boss. The boss was the dressing room, and the second boss was the chairman. Between that, he [Emery] was really in trouble.

“When he will arrive at Arsenal, he will be the boss and that’s something he was in Sevilla.”

Considering Arteta rejected the opportunity to take over at Arsenal due to the financial restrictions which would be placed on him, Bielderman was asked whether Emery would be frustrated by similar restrictions – such as the £50m transfer budget Arsenal’s manager is said to have available this summer.

He continued: “I don’t think any manager can cope with such [little] money – £50m! What can you buy?

“You buy one half of one of Neymar’s legs? You can’t fight the market.

“Of course he knows very well the Spainish league and he might find some interesting alternative players – he did so last year with [Yuri] Berchiche, the left-back at Real Sociedad who came to Paris Saint-Germain – but he was just a sub.

“Unfortunately today you can’t find a jewel for the price of a cheap packet.”
