Amar’e Stoudemire ready to continue playing career in Israel

Amar'e Stoudemire.

Although he may have ended his NBA career as a New York Knick this week, Amar’e Stoudemire looks set to carry on playing basketball professionally across the globe.

Having last played for the Miami Heat during their playoff run in the Eastern Conference this season, Stoudemire’s exit from the NBA seemed to indicate that he may have been heading for an early retirement at age 33.

He had signed a one-year non-guaranteed deal with New York so that he could retire as a Knick after spending five years of his career at the franchise, but that now seems to be only an NBA retirement.

According to reports, Stoudemire will make his next move to Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel to continue playing the sport for a few more years before closing the curtain completely on his impressive career, which contained two lengthy spells of success in both Phoenix, alongside Steve Nash, and New York.

Although he has been less effective in the NBA in the past couple of seasons as his superior athleticism, which had aided him throughout much of his career, began to wane, he will still be more than serviceable playing in Israel and Europe’s most elite basketball competition, Euroleague.

This should not be as surprising as it sounds, as Stoudemire owns a share of Hapoel Jerusalem and has previously referred to himself as culturally Jewis, stating he wants to gain Israeli citizenship.

Stoudemire will now also have to wait and see if he has done enough to reach his goal of one day entering the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, something which could be a major topic of discussion in the next couple of years.
