A dozen high school golfers in Oregon were disqualified from the state golf tournament after mistakenly playing an incorrect tee box.
The confusion occurred as a result of the tournament-issued scorecard at Quail Valley GC, where the yardage on the par-3 13th read 172 yards.
The field was playing from the blue tees, but on the hole the red tee was playing 172 yards listed on the scorecard, so the players moved up and played from there.
“The first four groups went with the scorecard and played from the red tee,” claimed a local reporter.
“By the time tournament officials were made aware of scorecard mistake, the first four groups had already finished No. 13. The fifth group and those that followed were made aware of the situation.”
The executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association said that the instruction to play from the blue tees was the “first bullet-point on the rules sheet.”
Players making the violation have been allowed to continue playing in the tournament, but their scores do not count.
